12. Sick of reading comments about Israelis and Palestinians when they're not relevant. The problem with humans is they make out a whole population, even a whole race of people is to blame for other people's acts. Just like Germany was. People generalise, and when you stop and think about it, it's madness to tar millions of people with the same brush. This as well as not learning from history, from past wars or atrocities. It's a horrible human trait. No matter how many people say it's wrong, we still do it.

14. One thing I want to know is that the Jews suffered greatly at the hands of the Nazis and others, but unfortunately, Israel kills people, destroys property, and slaughters children. How can they do this to the Palestinians and Arabs while they still lament what happened to them and receive compensation? It's a very strange world.

18. I don’t understand why the Jews were hated by the so called “Christian” .. I think it was jealousy. It just makes no sense at all to hate someone because they pray differently or because they only believe in the Old Testament. Humans can be so evil..
    I’d like to add that as I’m in my 40’s we were taught about WWII and also about Anne Frank but it was a “fluffy” version. I think especially now more than ever it’s so important to teach the honest truth whether or not you’re worried about your kids being traumatized from knowing the truth. There’s so many hateful people now and a lot of them came from my era.. history will only repeat itself if not learned from.

21. For reference, although this movie was very well made, this is not an accurate depiction of how the Warsaw ghetto was. There was so much disease and starvation, so much crowdedness- there would be full families all in one room, multiple families in an apartment, living on the street, living in stairwells. Kids would go through sewage systems to bring families back food. Kids living on the street were so weak that if someone would hand a piece of bread, many when they’d reach for the bread would die from the strength it took them. It was normal to see corpses strewn around. They had no money, no food, no access to the outside world. They could only trade amongst themselves. Kids would die trying to scavenge for food for their families, and the families would have to send the next kid because they had no choice. Many many people died there because of starvation and sickness. They were walking skeletons. There was no fun and games there like depicted in this movie in the beginning.

24. Watching The Island on Bird Street, I feel like I'm quietly sitting next to Alex in that small, dark attic, listening with him to every sound outside on the street, my heart pounding. The film is not noisy or dramatic in the usual way, but it touches the heart very deeply.

    Through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy, the Jewish ghetto appears both frightening and fragile. War in the film is not just gunfire or Nazi soldiers, but a prolonged loneliness, days of having to talk to oneself in order not to collapse. As loved ones are taken away one by one, all that remains for Alex is the promise to his father and the belief that one day he will return.

    What moves me the most is the way the film portrays a childhood forced to grow up. Alex is still a child – still scared, still missing his family – but circumstances have turned him into someone much stronger than his age. Amidst the darkness of war, that little boy's hope is small, but enough to warm the hearts of viewers.
