How one scene perfectly sums up just how great of an adaptation The Devil Wears Prada is.

Though I think the Miranda/Andy parallels are the main dynamic to analyze, I would argue that the Nigel/Andy parallels are also worth talking about. The film states clearly that if Andy continues down her current path, she will become Miranda, a woman who values the work more than the people involved. Andy's focus on her career in the film definitely validates this. But I think at the end of the day she is much more similar to, and in danger of becoming, Nigel.
The difference between Miranda and Nigel is that he cares more about people, even if just a little, as evidenced by his willingness to give Andy tough but true advice. He sees people for who they are, or he thinks he does anyway. When Miranda throws him under the bus to save her own skin, it hurts, but he tells himself it will all be worth it. Why?
Because he not only believes in Miranda, he believes that Miranda believes in him. The whole movie, but especially the conference room scene, confirms his worldview. Somewhere along the way, he became the one person Miranda could trust, and that's an emotional high that Andy experiences briefly as well. Nigel is the chosen one among the senior designers, Andy is the chosen one over Emily. Powerful people like Miranda needs the Nigels and the Andys of the world to think that they are valued for their sacrifices, because obviously if she chose to elevate them among the rabble, they must be special. Andy goes from Miranda's #1 hater to genuinely defending her abusive boss to her friends. That is, once she starts receiving validation from Miranda. Whether this is an intentional manipulation tactic on Miranda's part or not, the result is the same.
When Miranda throws her only real friend under the bus to save her own skin, Andy sees Miranda for the person she really is in a way that Nigel can't. If Andy lost her relationship in her year working for Miranda, what has Nigel sacrificed in all his time at Runway? If one day he is finally rewarded for all those sacrifices, will it be worth it? Andy doesn't think so, and that's why she does what Nigel won't and walks away.
The one thing I learned from this video is that the book is a high school level POS. Glad they made a better-written movie.
I think it was just a San Pellegrino ad. They’re everywhere in the meeting scene and they were probably getting a product placement kickback. Director added it once the contract went through. lol.
Ok
Yes please
The movie did a great job showing that Miranda’s job isn’t all that important tbh. She’s a project manager and everyone else under her are the truly hard workers. This scene makes this even more clear. Nigel is the true creativity behind Runway.
Wow, it must be a really interesting scene because it keeps reappearing in my suggestions what seems like Ten times a week. And i'm not even interested in that topic.
She was probably getting more skirts from Calvin Klein. What kind of skirts? Bore someone else with your questions
exceptional
Miranda being so demanding is because the job is demanding. She has no time to nurture, groom or be patient while someone learns the ropes. The entire magazine falls on her shoulders, and everyone wants her attention and needs her to make sure it runs smoothly. She's only ruthless because she's already sacrificed her personal life to achieve professional excellence, as exhibited when she discusses the divorce, but she can't dwell on it cause she needs to work.
Her assistants NEED to keep up with her, and her quick, vague and dictatorial management style lends itself to that. "Get me what I need, or get out of my way, and I'll find someone who CAN get me what I need now."
24 hours a day is all she gets to do probably 90 hours worth of work.
The conference room scene seals this image perfectly
A total waste of my time. Thanks for nothing Mr. Obvious.
The most interesting scene in the movie is the one without Anne Hathaway in it. Hmmmm….
Well said! Well comparisons!
Also "Florals? for spring? Groundbreaking."is such an iconic line that has been referenced to immortality since then, I cannot imagine that scene not being in the movie
Great script, great casting, great acting, great directing great movie.
For me, the scene with Emily in the hospital with Andy was the reason I purchased this movie. it is funny. it kept drawing me back until I relented and bought the movie. and I still go back to that scene

Make in 19 years….
That's all 😊😊😊
Thank you
Now 19 Years 😮
Love your analysis, it's so thorough! You picked on a lot of things, I didn't notice and I'm suprised that you could get so much from a movie that is often viewed as just another silly comedy. I think I might revisit this video essay if one day I want to write a review of my own! Lots of love❤

A very good movie. I enjoy watching it… repeatedly. However, not quite as much as I enjoy watching Lawrence of Arabia, Zulu, Paton & Waterloo. 😊
I totally empathises with Andy in TDWP bcoz I too am "workn" as a carer and supposed "friend" to an individual who makes MiRanda look like ano empathic friendly fun caring person to work with!
5:20 Correction: Ugly Betty was made in Colombia in the year 1999. If something is a copycat it is precisely The Devil Wears Prada.
Whats crazy about this movie is that.. the way Meryl plays Miranda, I wanted to know so much more about Miranda, like she was an actual person…
It should always be said, for a movie about fashion that came out 15 years ago, how INCREDIBLE the costuming is. its so timeless that all of the outfits still look fashionable today!! 15 years later just as much as they were than!
As a lover of this film, amazing analysis!!! this makes me wanna pick up the novel even if they have thier differences, lets me enjoy the story all over again! just subbed! thanks for this! 🙂
Isn't there's plans to make a sequel ?
Overall
Movie > Book
I like this movie. I like how the main character overcomes struggles and it also reminds me how cruel the workplace can be.
Meryl, I couldn't imagine any other actress playing this role. Simply brilliant. That's acting. That's all! 😉🫶🏻
I literally just watched this movie a couple days ago and there thing i liked that i dont anymore but i somehow still really like it. Specially the way miranda kinda panics/ is in shock that andy isnt behind her only for a second before she goes back to ruthless mogul mode.
Also, when miranda says Andy took the trip from Emily so they're basically the same is the one I kinda dislike the most simply because Emily was not a good assistant at all, I believe miranda wouldve andy go regardless
Just get to the effing point ffs 🤦♂️
Duuuude, get to the F'ing point already. We all seen it 1 million times!
