@JonDelArroz discusses the growing popularity of “romantasy” and erotic fiction within traditional science fiction and fantasy categories on platforms like Amazon. He argues that the market has become increasingly dominated by highly sexualized stories and monster-themed romances, which he believes make it harder for readers to discover classic-style sci-fi and fantasy and for authors of traditional genre fiction to stand out. According to Del Arroz, this trend reflects a broader shift in cultural tastes.
He points to examples of fanfiction-inspired works and niche romance subgenres that have achieved significant mainstream success. From his perspective, this rise in popularity signals a move away from the storytelling traditions that originally defined science fiction and fantasy. In response, he introduces his own new book, presenting it as a return to classic science fiction values—focused on strong world-building, adventure, and traditional storytelling. The video ultimately encourages viewers who share these concerns to seek out and support works that emphasize expansive worlds and plot-driven narratives, rather than those with explicit romantic themes.
