1. Thank you for this video. I don’t know where to begin…very helpful.

2. To me, the more speculative the Sci fi, the more I enjoy it.

   The way people of the Golden Age of Sci fi wrote things and the more outlandish and frankly silly or technically incorrect they pictured the future to be, the more interesting I find it.

   When the Sci fi is the drab, techie, as close to reality is is made to appear, the more boring it is.

   This of course is not always the case. My favorites in the genre are "hard" Sci fi like Starship troopers, and The Forever War.

3. I think a more recent essential anthology is "Mirrorshades" by Bruce Sterling. An interesting (but maybe not essential) anthology series is the 4-part "Quark" series by Samuel Delany.

6. Wow thank you so much. I’ve always wanted an in-depth guide to these anthologies since there’s just no way to know how many stories are good or what kind of sensibilities were driving the selection. This is invaluable.

   If it's helpful for others, here is the list of what I caught and approximate prices I found on ebay/ABEbooks

   The pocketbook of science fiction edited by Donald A. Wollheim
   cost is $20+

   Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volumes
   Looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Science_Fiction_Hall_of_Fame,_Volume_Two you can see the publication history between US and UK is a hot mess of titles. There were multiple different editors across the volumes.
   You might find better prices and different editions by comparing across them. Prices seem vary across volume ~$5-20

   American Science Fiction : Nine Classic Novels of the 1950s
   edited by Gary K. Wolfe
   American Science Fiction : Eight Classic Novels of the 1960s
   edited by Gary K. Wolfe
   used copies appear to be expensive ($50+ for each set)

   A Science Fiction Century edited by David G. Hartwell
   The Ascent of Wonder The Evolution of Hard SF edited by David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer
   both of these have used copies ~$5

   The Very Best of the Best 35 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction edited by Gardner Dozois

   can't find copies of this particular volume but there is a publication with similar title in two volumes. The Best of the Best: 20 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction and The Best of the Best Volume 2. (both ~$5) Not sure if same contents.

   The Best Science Fiction of the Year #1 edited by Terry Carr

   find lots of copies of later volumes as #2,#3, etc but looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_Best_Science_Fiction it appears it was published under different titles so more searching is needed. Lots of inexpensive Terry Carr stuff in general though.

   (there is and older volume with the same title edited by Groff Conklin to confuse things, not sure if any relationship or just name conflict)

8. Some great choices here. Such gems inside those anthologies. The “short short” stories anthology doesn’t get talked about a lot so I was especially pleased to see this.

10. Thanks for this, Steve. I have Hartwell’s Science Fiction Century based on your recommendation from a few years ago.

11. The Science Fiction Hall of Fame volumes are in print with the exception of volume 3. I am not sure why they took that out of print, and I doubt it will be reprinted. It has been a lot of years since it was last in bookstores.

    I have started a collection of these anthologies, and I really love Dozois and Hartwell. Mike Ashley is another I really enjoy. Great video, Steve!!

14. Hartwell passed several years ago.
