  1. First saw this movie in the late '50's-early 60's on TV, as a heavily edited version titled "Armored Attack". In that version all of the scenes which could be construed as pro-Soviet were edited out.

  2. Seems outdated even for 1943. What, not even Russian or even Ukrainian accents. No soviet tanks or artillery ? soviet uniforms were off. Oh well. Yes, the intentions were good.

  3. Interesting how this portrays what was commonly understood to be the fruits of communism. Yet Stalin killed off 30 million Ukrainians in the 30s. Not so idyllic but then American films tended to be a lot of hype as well.

  4. Until 1974, Ukrainian villagers didn’t have passports and couldn’t leave their kolkhoz (collective farm). If they were caught trying to travel to a city, they were fined and sent back to their villages.
The only way for young men to get into a big city was through military service, as all conscripts were issued passports.

  5. Thanks for upload…great film for its time and purpose but totally oblivious of the situation in the early Eastern Front…a very nuanced situation with many "sides" in conflict.
