Welcome to my first (very blurry – it should be fixed for the next upload) lecture of my BYU 2020 creative writing class. As you probably surmised from the title of the video, I focus on writing science fiction and fantasy.
This class was more of an introduction for the rest of the term but I do discuss a few important things: creating writing habits, a bit about discovery/architect writing, and how writing groups should work.

"I have code monkeys friends who wirte books" Thank you Brandon
that is truly inspiring for me (as a programmer myself)
Found this after listening to Warbreaker on Audible. I am working on a huge science fiction project, your structure and attitude is exactly what I need to help me focus and get the world out of my mind and into reality. Thank you for making this course accessible! 💜
Setting aside what a terrible person and kinda mid writer HP Lovecraft was, probably the biggest factor in his eventual success was his friends. He didn't make it in his lifetime, but after he died, the people he regularly corresponded with, particularly August Derleth, felt his writing deserved more attention than it had gotten and preserved and published his writing, including the pieces he'd set aside and never published himself. And now, nearly a century later, he's one of he most influential horror writers of all time, to the point that he has a whole subgenre named after him and has inspired some of the most renowned IPs of the modern day. So, you well and truly cannot underestimate the value of having friends in the writing community.
1/5 out of any 1st year college classes actually wouldn’t be a terrible statistic these days.
I see so many different authors and literary instructors contradict each other that it becomes confusing and daunting for me to write any fiction.
– Start with action. Don't start with action.
– Show don't tell. Tell and show.
– Do deep research before starting. Write from your gut, research just what you need.
– Write what you know. Write what you feel.
It has become so confusing.
Who is right?
I had a pair of Creative Writing instructors in my college class who constantly told me that my stories were a waste of time. Not to give up my day job.
One person out of thirty in the class enjoyed my tales. The others did not like them at all.
I have the desire to share my fiction stories. But as they are (apparently) terrible and such, I am very disheartened. And there is a strong voice in my head asking 'Why bother writing? You suck.'
I then become more depressed.
I have had some of my short stories published within 4 anthologies. If they are critiqued they have been quite hurtful ('Why is this story in here. It ruins the quality of the anthology.')
I have heard people say, 'Just write.' But, again, I keep seeing books, classes, and online courses which contradict each other that I am going in circles wondering what the hell I'm supposed to do.
Anyway….
28:45 depressing to hear as a programmer, but love the lecture and won’t let that stop me
Brandon thank you! Your books helped me in a dark place. I was in a dungeon (CA State Prison). Your Spren gave me an escape! I write poetry, song, and blog. I write a lot, and these videos are helping as well. You are making a difference in people's lives. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I don't write books, I write music–but I learned SO much from this lecture!
with due respect, this hour long lecture could have been three slides
Wish I could have been in a class like this 20 odd years ago. What works for me is I drive trucks… I have old school pad and pen. All week I short outline and brain dump then at the weekends I devote 8 to 10 hours in scrivener.
Well sh1t…. I am a computer programmer.
Understanding the intricacies of brick laying is not a fool's labor. All of us might want to know how left-brain and right-brain activities enhance creativity.

Thank you
Thank you for putting this on YouTube. Words can't express how much this means to me and I am sure many others.

I majored in English with a concentration in creative writing. Pretty much all I took sophomore-senior year were writing classes. And it was a concentration that didn’t have very many people so I had pretty much the exact same group of people taking every class with me those three years with little variation and the same couple of professors for every class. I had a baby junior year but for some reason I was usually the one who turned in all my assignments on time and never asked for extensions 😅. So Dr. B (the main professor I usually had for like 3 classes per semester) would always come to me quietly when we had a big assignment coming up and be like “you’re not gonna need an extension too are you? Because if you don’t then I’m not giving it to any of these turds” 😂😂😂
And I don’t say this to say people without kids in college don’t have legitimate excuses for needing extensions but most of the time assignments were like 2000 word assignments every other week with writing exercises given to us in class as an opportunity to work on our assignments and I feel like most people got bogged down with other classes and kind of just… didn’t do the work for the writing classes because they don’t take it as seriously.
Thanks AFAIK again
He’s wearing a TwoSetViolin sweatshirt! I think.
One job you shouldn’t have: don’t be a computer programmer.
… … uh-oh
What a great class. It was so gripping, I feel fortunate for those who were present. Thank you Brandon for uploading it for free. It speaks volumes about you.
47:28 "It's a real achievement to finish things"
I just found this channel… I love to write short horror stories but I feel I need to improve my vocabulary and grammar 😢. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to do this ?
Loved this first lesson! It’s real fortunate that he’s a great speaker!
Listening to this lecture as I do mundane stuff around the house, makes time fly by and makes me feel so accomplished! Next time I will actually take notes 😃 Thank you so much for posting these!
24.00- Practice moves a writer up the ladder from tactical towards strategic concerns.
As a brick layer, I can confirm that it makes writing after a day of work very easy.
Is 35000 words a lot?
I started watching this for no reason and then started relate with many of the events being commented as examples, it was really cool

He has great stage presence, it's super easy to get interested!
I wish to start writing but I think a lot and mostly negative. For instance, I would ask myseld, I have only 4-5 good ideas about stories right now that I want to tell and are those enough. How can I think of becoming a writer just by having few ideas and most probably, no one's gonna like them.
Thank you so much für putting your work, your time and your experience on YouTube for free so that we can learn from it.
